Highlights of this year’s Soul Train Awards included Brandy’s “Lady of Soul” performance, a Dru Hill reunion, the soul cypher, and a rendition of “The Waters” by Anderson. Paak and BJ The Chicago Kid.
The recording of the 2016 Soul Train Music Awards aired earlier tonight (Nov. 27), after the ceremony had been held earlier this month (Nov. 6) in Las Vegas. The award winners were unveiled with tonight’s broadcast, and Beyonce won a few of the major categories, while Drake came away empty-handed despite leading all artists with 12 nominations. Those who tuned in also got to witness a number of exciting performances. Brandy was given the Lady of Soul achievement award, and she complemented the accolade with a performance of some of her classic tracks. Her medley included “I Wanna Be Down,” “What About Us,” and “Top of the World,” for which she was joined by the man who featured on the ’98 single, Bad Boy rapper Ma$e.
Teddy Riley, the singer, songwriter, keyboardist, producer, and overall icon of hip-hop and R&B, was the recipient of the Soul Train Legend award, and he performed alongside many of his most esteemed collaborators, including Guy, Bobby Brown, Doug E. Fresh, and more. The award show also included the onstage reunion of Dru Hill. The R&B group performed 1996’s “Tell Me” as well as “Thong Song,” the biggest hit released by its lead singer, Sisqo.
In terms of contemporary songs, Erykah Badu — the host of this year’s show — joined D.R.A.M. on stage for “Wifi,” their collaboration off the Virginia artist’s new album, Big Baby D.R.A.M., and Anderson. Paak and BJ The Chicago Kid performed “The Waters,” off Paak’s January album, Malibu.
